The Lab Specimen Receiving (LSR) area at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH receives all types of specimens; blood, urine, body fluids, biopsies, amputations, everything that requires laboratory testing. Laboratory specimens are received from inpatient units, outpatient clinics, our off-site D-H Laboratories, our D-H affiliate hospital laboratories and from other outside institutions.  The D-H Lab Specimen Receiving area is a 24x7x365. The LSR staff comprises of 20 Lab assistants, 5 Senior Lab Assistants and a Supervisor. The D-H Laboratory Assistants triage and prepare the specimens for delivery to the different Laboratory Departments for testing in the Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine. There are many different facets to the role of a Laboratory Assistant; data entry into the Laboratory system, specimen labeling; ensuring proper identification, receiving and making phone calls, centrifugation, pipetting, problem solving, etc. The role of a Laboratory Assistant is essential, as we support and provide quality specimens to our all our different Laboratory Departments in a fast paced environment, which results in excellent patient care.  The workflow processes in LSR were developed based on LEAN/Six Sigma process improvement conducted by the LSR staff members.  Many LSR staff members are yellow or green belt certified through our D-H Value Institute. The Lab Assistant position is all on the job training and it is extremely educational and rewarding.
