Dartmouth-Hitchcock’s Phlebotomist Career Ladder means that you can start as a Phlebotomist Trainee with no experience and learn the basic competencies of the role.  Once you are independently performing draws, you are moved automatically into the Phlebotomist 1 tier.  From there, with further training and experience, you work toward earning the national certification, as well as using your knowledge to train new team members.  The Career Ladder affords you the opportunity to grow in the department while also seeing your hourly rate increase as you meet the competencies.

The program requires a High School Diploma or equivalent, a focus on customer service and providing a great patient experience, along with the ability to work in a fast-paced environment. 

After the interview process, if you are successful in obtaining an offer to join this awesome team, you can expect the following:

  • To work full-time hours for about 2-3 months to complete all of the required training in both inpatient and outpatient phlebotomy. 
  • When you have completed one year in your role, you can sit the exam to become a Certified Phlebotomist (through ASCP – The American Society for Clinical Pathology). 

An integral part of our hospital operations – the role of the Phlebotomist is a key player in the facilitation of collecting and passing along a vital piece of information to our Laboratory and Pathologists to help Dartmouth-Hitchcock achieve its mission of providing each person the best care, in the right place, at the right time, every time.

The Phlebotomist collects blood samples from patients of all ages.  They identify patients and procure samples.

This per diem position is located in Dartmouth-Hitchcock’s southern region, and travel between sites is expected.  These locations include: Manchester, Nashua, Concord, Merrimack, Milford, Hudson, the Bedford Clinic and MOB.  Reimbursement is available should you have to travel from one site to another.

Responsibilities: A listing of the key responsibilities:

  1. Obtains blood specimens from outpatients.  Maintains knowledge of specific specimen requirements, and follows the correct order of draw based on tube type and special handing of tests.  Utilizes proper resources for obtaining specimen requirement information.
  2. Collects and enters off-site blood work into system.
  3. Completes and processes a variety of forms.  Obtains pre-authorizations and patient signatures.
  4. Prepares specimens for in-lab testing or off-site shipment.  Processes specimens that require special handling according to established procedures or protocols.
  5. Ensures blood drawing stations are clean and well stocked.
  6. Performs other duties as required or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school graduate or the equivalent required.
  • 1 year of medical/technical experience desired.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills required.
  • Proven work experience with the public.
  • Strong computer ability desired.
  • Applicant must be honest, dependable, able to multi-task, and be detail oriented.

Required Licensure/Certification Skills:

  • BLS required within 30 days of employment.
  • Certified Phlebotomist, ASCP preferred.
